Melanie Jame Wolf works solo and with friends to make artworks, performances, and texts about power, persona, and the phenomenon of 'show business': the persuasive, the deceptive, the staged, the dramatic, the cathartic, and the performed in political, theatrical, and every day contexts. Using textile performance, choreography, text, moving image and installation, she makes work for theater, gallery and screen spaces. Her work is concerned with the problems and poetics of class, sensuality, gender, narratology, the radical vulnerability of the live moment, and the body as an unruly political riddle. These interests are explored through shape-shifting, stitching, and play with language in subliminal and surprising ways. She is invested in humour as a strategy for deepening the critical potential of works of art. Performance in her practice is understood as a technology of survival. She is interested in how stories come to be told and who gets to tell them.
