UNRULY MATERIAL (after Genet, after Mr. Punch)
2026
single channel 4K video
9 minutes, 58 seconds
Loosely inspired by Jean Genet's ”The Maids”, ”Unruly Material” is first and foremost a formal experiment. The exhibition marks a turning point in Wolf’s artistic practice, as she moves from abstraction toward figurative forms. The artist examines what the gestures of cutting, tearing, stitching and layering textile signify, not only as material operations, but as acts of constructing and destabilizing representation.
Manual labor and the presence of hands, which continually intervene in the material, reveal the process as a space of tension between control and chance.
In this sense, Wolf’s practice develops a complex analogy to themes of role-playing, the performative dimension of violence, unreality, and mechanisms of power. What is visible proves to be the result of manipulation. What is material reveals its own instability. The exhibition does not so much represent reality as it exposes the process of its production – precarious, open to intervention, and entangled in relations of power.
